Facebook & Facebook Messenger
Although less popular among youth in comparison to other social media apps, Facebook and Messenger are still highly active and are important to note. Both owned by Meta, Facebook, and Messenger can be used together under Facebook’s web browser platform, or separately in their own respective apps from the iOS App Store or Google Play store. Facebook is a social media platform that allows users to stay connected with friends and family online. Since its creation in 2004, Facebook has over five billion downloads 52 and is now operated under the umbrella company Meta, which also owns Instagram. Similar to Snapchat and Instagram, Facebook also has the option to view “Stories” which are posts made to share with your social media friends that last for 24 hours.
Messenger is a separate app which is an exclusively instant and direct messaging service, that automatically connects to a user’s Facebook friend list. As Messenger is integrated into the desktop version of Facebook but not the mobile version, the separate Messenger app had 262.5 million downloads in 2023 53 and is used on mobile more frequently than the standalone Facebook app.
